When we are talking about pregnancy people love to focus on the beautiful and meaningful parts. You are creating life and that famous pregnancy glow should be all over you by now but you are stuck with acne, swollen ankles, and a weak bladder? Well, you are definitely not alone. Pregnancy has a huge toll on one’s body and the cocktail of hormones flowing through your veins is definitely going to show their effects on your body. Here are the most common side-effects of pregnancy and some tips on how to battle them. 

Swollen Ankles

It’s one of the most common side effects of pregnancy. Your body is retaining more water than usual and by the end of the day it often ends up gathered up in your feet. Try to avoid standing for extended periods of time. Do light exercise and when seated, elevate your feet. Make sure your footwear is roomie and comfortable. 

Weak Bladder

As your baby is growing bigger they often end up pressing against your bladder. This is very common and completely normal, so even though it can be uncomfortable, there is nothing to worry about. You might need to pee a lot more often and some mild incontinence is quite usual. Stock up on some good sanitary pads. Kegel exercises and a fiber-rich diet can help you manage this issue better as well. 

Yeast infection

During your pregnancy yeast infections can occur quite easily. The hormonal changes in your body can mess with your natural PH levels. Unfortunately, most drugs that are generally used to treat yeast infections are not recommended for pregnant women so that might be off the table. Even if it’s treated, there is no guarantee it won’t come back again while you are pregnant. Wear breathable cotton underwear and avoid taking baths. Don’t use scented soaps while cleaning.


Your skin can become quite oily due to the increased hormone levels. This can quickly turn into a bad case of acne especially during the first and second trimester. Try to avoid any medical treatment as it will likely go away after giving birth, in the meanwhile, you can try to control the situation. Gentle apple cider vinegar washes tend to help. Don’t wash your face too often and try to keep your skin dry. Change your pillowcase frequently and void touching your face as this can bring unwanted bacteria into your pores.


Profuse sweating one of the most common pregnancy side effects. There is no magic remedy unfortunately but there are some steps you can take to make yourself feel more comfortable. Make sure you wear very breathable clothing that dries quickly. Usually, sports shirts will do the trick. If you are suffering from a bad case of night sweats try sleeping on a microfibre towel. They are very light and dry super quickly so you won’t be sleeping in your own pool of sweat. Make sure you stay hydrated and try to avoid spicy foods as they can increase sweating as well. Investing in a small handheld fan would probably help a great deal as well. 

Constipation and bloating

During your pregnancy, your digestion will likely slow down. This can result in constipation and bloating. Before turning to stool softeners there are some other remedies you can try. First of all try to exercise as this can encourage healthy bowel movements and it will also be beneficial 9 months later when you are laying on the delivery table. You can try some prenatal yoga or just go to the park for a quick walk daily. Drinking a lot of water, eating well and staying hydrated can do wonders for your body!


Unfortunately, this often comes hand in hand with constipation. More often than not this will get better after delivery however, it can make your life just a little bit more miserable in the meanwhile. Soaking in warm bathwater can ease the pain and witch hazel soaked pads can manage some of the discomforts. Avoid sitting for long periods of time and make sure you are eating a fiber-rich diet. 

Heartburn and Acid reflux

Unfortunately, heartburn is another very common side effect of pregnancy. The good news is it is usually quite easy to manage. Eat smaller portions more often. Try to avoid being completely full and cut out fatty meals. A glass of milk can also help to ease the discomfort and ‘put out the fire’. If all else fails there are some drugs available for pregnant women but make sure you check with your doctor first before taking them. 


Another thing you can thank your raging hormones for. Some women develop brown patches on their skin. It’s especially common on the face but can appear anywhere on your body. This is also called “the mask of pregnancy” as it most commonly triggered by pregnancy hormones. It will usually go away after delivery. Use high SPF sun cream as sunlight can make them more profound and you can also try some aloe vera masks to lighten the blemishes. 

Bleeding Gums

Some women experience swollen and bleeding gums during pregnancy. It’s likely that the reason is plaque build-up and your hormones have made your gums more sensitive to the irritation. You should be able to control this with a good dental routine such as washing your teeth gently twice a day and using mouthwash (don’t use alcohol-based ones) and flossing. If there is a lot of bleeding make sure you contact your dentist. Good oral hygiene, in general, should help to resolve this issue. 

There are many less desirable pregnancy side effects, that’s for sure. Sometimes looking at those glowing mothers on Instagram can really make you question yourself however remember that all of these are completely normal. Your body is literally creating another life and that takes a toll on it. Embrace your ‘mom body’ and remember that this is all going to be worth it in the end when you get to meet the new little one in your life.
