How to Get Rid of Hiccups for Newborns and Babies

We know that most people smile or laugh when they hear that hiccup sound and especially when it comes from babies. Baby hiccups can sound so adorable and sweet but you might feel worried if it happens a lot. So, Are baby hiccups normal? Well, yes, baby and newborn hiccups are totally normal and harmless. I know you’re probably worried about it, but it is just a sign of a baby’s growth and development.

Feeding Smaller Amounts for your Babies

As parents, we love to watch our kids when they take a big bite or finish their meal quickly but when a hungry baby takes too much food or milk too fast, that can cause hiccups. Instead of one big feeding at a time, just try to feed your little one half as much and twice as often. Therefore, your baby can digest the food easier and more slowly. Plus, you might want to avoid your baby's tummy getting too full and alleviate gas pressure for your baby because they can also trigger hiccups.

Changing the Position When you Feed Your Baby

New moms tend to feed their babies when they are not sitting upright for the comfort of the baby without noticing that this position allows gas to rise and pass naturally the most. By sitting upright at around a 30-40 degree angle instead of laying her down in the crook of your elbow. You can also subtly shift the baby during feeding breaks to see if it would stop a bout of hiccups.

Stop when your baby is fussy

We know it is frustrating when your baby is being cranky during feeding and you just want your baby to finish the meal as quickly as possible. However, there is a chance your little one will swallow more air during that process which will cause hiccups. So, instead of continuing to breastfeed or bottle-feed a fussy baby, you can just stop for a little while to see if you can calm your baby down. The fussing not only leads to hiccups but also increases the chances your baby will vomit, so taking a short break may help your baby relax and enjoy food more.

Try to burp your baby between feedings

One of the easiest ways to slow the baby’s milk intake is to burp your baby a couple of times in the middle of a feeding. If you are breastfeeding, remember to burp your newborn when you switch breasts. And if you feed your baby by bottles, just burp your baby when it is halfway done with the bottle. Moreover, this is a great opportunity to let your little one sit up straight and gently rub or pat her back. Another technique is to lay your baby’s head on your shoulder and give her a chance to pass air bubbles. The fewer air bubbles, the less likely your little one will get hiccups.

Holding your bottle correctly

When you bottle-feed your baby, tilt the bottle so the milk can completely fill the nipple. Therefore, less air collects at the bottom of the bottle. You can also make sure that your baby’s head is slightly elevated at a 45-degree angle. Also, make sure you use a good nipple on the bottle and hand-wash it so it can last longer.

Looking for the sign of Colic

Babies who suffer from stomach issues may have reflux that causes hiccups. If your little one seems to have hiccups most of the time, this could be the culprit. In this case, you can feed your baby products like Gripe water which is a mix of herbs and water and traditionally used to treat colic and other stomach problem.

The gripe water usually contains:

  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Fennel 
  • Chamomile

At the end of the day, hiccups are usually not something to worry about. It’s a very common situation for all parents. If your baby hiccups more than normal (the average should be a few times a day and usually last for 10 minutes or longer) then you should consult your doctor for more advice.
